Subject: Tremendous Other One.
You'll definitely want to find a way to listen to this via the official release. This is a powerful Other One. I've been listening to all of the Fall 71, 72, and 73 tours this year and I have to say I'm often most looking forward to these 71 shows when it comes to the jams. (I don't really share the fascination many have with November 72, for me most of it pales in comparison to September and the St Louis run.) It's fun listening to Keith just instantly adapt and help drive the jams. Fall 71 lays the elemental prototype for the 1972 jam format. Except the Dark Stars and Other Ones don't lean so heavy on the space, they tend to be really fast driving jams, often reminiscent of Caution.
That's the case with this Other One. It's full of energy. Jerry just flies on some of his greatest bluegrass style picking, Billy is an animal throughout, and Phil is particularly active, at one point pushing the Feelin Groovy riff in the heat they lay down before Uncle. Uncle itself isn't my favorite version of this medley common of the time but keeps the energy going. This is one of those ones where they charge back into the Other One jam rather than dip into any serious spaciness. Any hint of slowing down is quickly built back up into fiery jams, no extended quiet segments or feedback sections here, there's barely time to breathe. They aren't yet exploring the quiet dynamics as much yet. Everybody seems to be paying attention to each other, never stumbling on any tempo, dynamic, or thematic changes. Except for Weir doing that thing where you're always expecting another bar of the main riff but he starts the verses instead.
At any rate this was an excellent choice for a release to drop an upgrade, it was much needed. At this time I honestly don't remember any specific highlights of the rest of the show, but definitely check out the jam, it delivers. Unfortunately this recording does not, if you don't own it I'm sure the Dave's Pick is easily streamable via spotify or YouTube.

New Riders opened for them right?
The Dead played for hours!
Two Questions: Did Jerry play slide for the New Riders in the opening show ,Ike h3 did on their first album?
And
Was Pigpen still playing with the Dead then?
I can’t remember.

Despite Any Recording Glitches,Hiss Or Taping Lineage This One Should Be Appreciated A Bit More. From The Past Reviewers You Would Think This A Sub Par Show For The Period. I Find The Band Engaged Fully With Each Other And Their Surroundings. Jerry Seems A Bit More Animated Than Usual. Connecting With The Crowd And It Transfers Directly To His Playing. Grate Slow Blues Riffs In The First Section Of The Other One. Despite The Sound Breaking Off A Bit After A Splice The Transition From Uncle And The Jam With Phil In The Reprise Make This One Special. So Much Negative Energy Coming From The Reviewers. Learn To Appreciate What You See, Hear And Feel. This One, Hearing The Band Enjoy Their Craft And Their Jaunt Through The Southwest, Makes Me FEEL GOOD.

Thank you for sharing the music that started my journey on the bus! It was a magical night. I really enjoyed listening to it again. Magical night as it snowed while we were in the concert!

This recording now makes me read the sources and lineage a lot more carefully! I got all excited with that big bold SBD out front, then come to realize after a previous reviewer noted this is actually SBD broadcast over FM and taped with a microphone onto a cassette. Not a great recording, which is doubly too bad for me because it is the first Wharf Rat in a few shows chronologically.

with Keith pianoing away very beautifully, but other than that a pretty average '71 show & slightly below-average recording.

This is a microphone recording of an FM broadcast--spot vbr file check shows a mono mix, occassionally boomy base, some patches/splices sub-par quality. Fans of the period may find it worthwhile.
